While shooting in Rockefeller Center this weekend, I was pleasantly surprised to see the new Bee-centric display concept at Anthropologie.  It's a crazy synergy of the 2 projects I have been spending all my time on these last few months.  Now thats hot.  Those guys at Anthropologie are so good, aren't they?

La Boca

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Surprisingly, the most touristed of neighborhoods in Buenos Aires is totally worth the visit. All the building in this area were painted with left over paint from the adjacent shipyard.  Since the hulls of ships were painted in the brightest of colors to make them visible, the left over mishmash resulted in a distinctive neighborhood that draws the camera toting tourists by the masses.

Regazzoni, Rabbits, and Rats

Buenos Aires, Argentina

OK - so whizzing down the freeway, we spotted this metal dinosaur sculpture.  And when you are shooting a TV show about art, found objects, etc... its the kind of thing that's good to stop and see, just in case there something interesting going on.

Sure enough we meet this man who creates giant sculptures out of found objects.  It's pretty amazing stuff, and it's all housed in this fascinating complex in the center of Buenos Aires.  It was a sort of farmyard housed in an abandoned train station.  The animals, our host made clear, were there to eat, and only to eat.  He was just fattening them up, like Hansel and Gretel. Each night after 8pm, he turned the whole place into a restaurant, which sounds like an appealing idea, but sort of feels like dining in a slaughterhouse.  

Imagine dining as rats run across your feet and giant rabbits in tiny cages sit next to your table awaiting the early morning knife that will put them out of their misery and feed tomorrow night's patrons.

Dennis Severs Had a Dream...

London, UK

...To live in 18th Century London.  Which was far far away from the 20th century Californian lifestyle he had been born into.  So he packed his bags, moved to London, and set about making it a reality.  You can see the result of his obsession at the Dennis Severs house, which is open to the public for (i think) a couple hours every month (at very strange hours, I might add).

This is no museum or disneyland fantasy of what is was like to live in the 18th century.  This is the reality - that can be seen as ugly my many, but it also quite beautiful in its own way.  Its dirty - cold, there is not much light.  And it is completely lacking in all the comforts we surround ourselves in today.  That's the big takeaway really.  How much of our environment we miss.  And how we really arent forced to deal with our surroundings in any real way anymore.  Probably a blessing and a curse.

This house takes you back to when every comfort was a labour of love, and therefor the small things really had much more meaning.  A candle lit room warmed by a fire was a great moment.

You can pay about 16.00 to sit in one at the Dennis Severs house.  Strangely, it's well worth it
